Netting - Freebie Idea
« on: September 12, 2013, 14:55 »
I have horses and when opening the large bales of haylage we all feed throughout winter to our animals we have to take off large amounts of netting.  The farmers net the bales before they are wrapped in plastic to protect them.  This netting is quite fine, around 3-4 foot wide and the piece I took off my bale today was around 20 feet long.   Whilst carefully unwinding it I suddenly thought hey I have lovely cabbage or fruit netting here.  We normally just bin it or throw it on the bonfire.  I looked around to see bundles of it everywhere in our hay/straw barn.  I will be taking some to my allotment and offering to neighbours.  If anyone else has a local stable or livery yard near them it might be worth an ask for this netting as we go thro around 2-3 of these bales a week and it would otherwise be binned.  Could be a freebie waiting to be claimed!

Good result there - it sounds very useful!

I've had mine for free from scaffolding - it's called debris netting and apparently once it is used it gets thrown away :-).

My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

My gardening diary is here - go on, have a peek , you might be able to help me!

To keep Cabbage White Butterfly off Brassicas the mesh size needs to be 7mm or smaller (the blighters can fold up their wings to get through small gaps)

Wide mesh (a couple of inches) would be great as a bird netting.

I shall measure it - but as it free you could always double it up to make it finer as it is pretty light weight

I've been using bale netting this year - doubled or trebled if needed.  It's not too tidy, but that's just because I wasn't very careful unwrapping the bales!
