refractometer help / jam labelling.
« on: June 19, 2013, 12:07 »
Hi everyone :-)
Just wondered if someone might be able to help? Im going to be selling some jams at a few craft fairs and contacted trading standards re advice for what to put on my labels.  i know i now need to put the fruit amount per 100g which I've calculated no prob, but also the total sugar content per 100g....
I've bought a refractometer for doing this and  have learnt how to use it, but my question is the brix refractometer gives me the reading in %, how do i calculate / convert the reading to grams. say my reading on the refractometer was 65% how do i calculate the 'grams' per 100g per batch. Sorry for the babbled msg. x

65% = 65g per 100g?  Sounds logical but I'm sure someone will let me know if I'm wrong.  ::)

Hi there. I too make and sell. I have a refractometer just like yours and if the reading is 65% sugar then that is what I put on my jars. The 65% measurement tells you that in ever blob of jam or marmalade 65% of the blob is sugar.

I have been doing this since 2010 and no problems.

It seems like you are doing your selling the correct way, so well done.

it really gets me cross when I see others who obviously are not doing it the right way, and undercutting those of us who are.

Saw 2 people last Saturday, no ingredient labels, sticky jars, little cloth hats to hide the reused lids, and jars all different sizes and the front labels skewed.

Do you have public liability insurance? This can be very expensive, but the people I go with are the best priced I have found.
PM me if you would like the address and number.

Or if you would like to share experiences and support. :)

Good luck with your enterprise. I have several regular spots and it is great when you get regulars who come back week after week.

Hi. I'm just going through this whole process too... Any info on reasonable public liability insurance would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hi Babba. The people you want for public liability insurance are G M Imber and Sons.

They are the cheapest I have found and most commonly used by market traders.

£55 a year. This will give you the cover that you need.
