Not actually against the trunk --leave a space of a few inches to save any chance of rotting during wet periods.

Better to be safe than sorry --- nectarines are such lovely trees, especially the flowers in Spring  :D

does get a problem with peach leaf curl I think so good tar wash this winter  :)
