New phenomenon with sweetcorn
« on: August 18, 2013, 13:28 »
Anyone else had the following strange happening? A couple of my sweetcorn in the polytunnel have not produced cobs but their are fat corn grains in the flower tassels. The rest are great but I've never seen grains in the tassels before

Yes, I've had a couple this year, one on my own saved sweet corn seed and one from my purchased Golden Bantam. First time I've noticed it, but have assumed it's normal as I guess most living things throw up occasional gender confusion.

Ah - so as in the tassels and not the silks where the cobs should be. I now need to go out and have a look at mine in the greenhouse as they did superbly in there last year, but have noticed the higher cobs stripped or opened by something but the lower ones were ok and all silks have not gone brown as yet.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My Applause F1 seeds bought from Wilco's are doing the same. Is it because of the F1 strain??

I've had this with Lark this season. Only on cobs that have tried to grow on the sideshots though.
