Hatching egg viability
« on: August 27, 2013, 09:43 »
Yet another post..........  I ordered 6 cream legbar eggs for my broody legbar and 6 Vorwerk eggs for my broody BO.   The legbar lasted 2 days so I put them all under the BO. As the legbar eggs arrived later than the seller said  I contacted them to say my broody had 'gone off' and they replied to say that the eggs are viable for two weeks.  Now my Buff Orpington doesn't want to sit on them............ How 'viable' are the eggs. I am wasting time & money and getting very down about the whole thing.  My partner says I cannot spend another penny until I 'get my act together'  I feel like giving up and selling up the chickens/coops etc........  :(

The eggs can be viable for up to 3 weeks so you will have time to sort something out.  See if you can borrow an incubator, by the time the chicks have hatched you may have a broody and you can switch eggs for chicks.  You could see if someone local has a broody without eggs as they may be prepared to let her sit on yours in exchange for some of the chicks.

The only other option I can think of is to put your broody back in a brooder box which is dark and quiet.  It needs to be big enough for her to have food and water in as well.  Put a couple of non fertile eggs in the nest and give it a few days to see if she will sit again.  If she does sit just check to make sure she has not soiled the nest, remove the food/water and replace the eggs with the fertile ones.  Once she is sitting properly you should be able to let her out daily for food and water and of course a broody poo.

I tried putting her in an ark by herself and closed the doors so it was dark. Checking on her she has cracked & or eaten 4 of the eggs  and was desperate to get so I let her.  maybe I ll have to put this one down to experience too!!!

I would store the fertile eggs at a constant temperature, cool but not cold.  You know that it will be s*ds law, one of your hens will go broody if you ditch the eggs.
