Winter crops
« on: August 13, 2013, 21:45 »
Hi
I know the laws of rotation mean that crops don't go in the same bed for the next 3 or 4 years but what about winter crops going in the same bed as the summer. We are thinking of over wintering onions-can they go in a bed that onions have just come out of??
Cheers

I take the rotation to mean you can have crops from the same family group in the same place in a 12month cycle.

However if you put overwintering onions in the same space as the ones just come out, BUT as the over wintering onions won't be ready until next Juneish that part of your garden / plot will have had onions in it for more than 12months. In case like this there would be an increased risk of problems and diseases developing.

It would be reasonable to grow veg where you can get 2 distinct crops within a 12month period.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Don't get hung up on rotation. It's not critical on the scale that most of us grow things. Just don't grow the same family of crops in the same place year after year.

Onions is one crop where I would always be strict about rotation. The one disease you do not want is white rot, once you have it you will never get rid of it. The longer the ground is growing onions the more chance there is of the disease building up.

I've got white rot on my plot, so I'll agree with Salmo - you don't want to get it either  :(

Thanks! A bit of a pain as it makes next years plans a bit more awkward but I will figure it out...

That's part of the fun though! :D
I'm putting the winter onions where the summer onions came up but I've never had diseased onions.
Leeks yes. But not onions. And that was leek moth larvae (I think) rather than disease. ;)

I put Autumn onions in the bed that is part of next year's rotation, and the same with Spring Cabbage too, on the rationale that they go in the bed for the season in which I harvest them.

Werks fer me  :D

But others do different things that werk fer them  ;)
