Green or red peppers??

Green or red peppers??

I have a few pepper plants that have grown a few peppers on which is a bonus as every year ive never had any success, they are green peppers but will they change colour like chillis do if I leave them longer???

mine have gone from black to purple, have a few that went green and stayed green also some yellow ones forming


no red though

The red varieties of sweet peppers (chillis are different) that you see in supermarkets, all start off green and turn sweet and red as they ripen.
You get less fruit if you leave them to ripen to red, as the plant won't set any more - so if you don't mind green ones eat a few that way as well  :)


Other varieties ripen to yellow, or orange of course - so it always helps to know which variety you are growing  ;)

I grow about 4 plants leave 2 to ripen to red then harvest the other 2 when they are green that way you get the 2 colours. I also chop mine up and freeze them as like most veg you get a load in one go that you may not be able to use.

Once I had realised that the plants stops flowering when the peppers are red, I get lots more green ones and then leave the ones on the plant to ripen towards September
