Removing caterpillars
« on: July 14, 2013, 21:05 »
Evening all,

I've been cropping calabrese and have found a few green caterpillars hiding away, but after they have been served up!

Is there any way of getting rid, i.e soaking in salt water that anyone can recommend?

If not i guess I'm gonna have to chop them up before cooking! 😊

Probably the best way is as you suggest, cutting the calabrese up and soaking in salty water until the caterpillars rise to the top. Better to have to deal with a few bugs than spraying your crops.  :D

Definitely agree with not spraying but I don't want to put the kids off eating veg too if they find a bug! It doesn't bother me but my wife is quite squeamish!

I'll try some salty water tomorrow before tea and see if it works! 😊

Elm I think you need to immerse in salt water for at least 10 mins.  Then agitate to release them.
