Tomatoes again!
« on: July 17, 2013, 13:58 »
The tomatoes in my polytunnel were planted in 2 stages around a month apart because I started the first ones early to see how they went.

However the 2nd lot which have now been in for over a month are really weird.  Some are about 3ft high and flowering, but 8 of them I thought were going to die.  I kept watering them and now they have new growth, but they are still only up to a foot high.  All on the same side of the tunnel.  This is the same side that didn't do so well last year, although I did get quite a few tomatoes from them.

Is it worth leaving them in, or should I hoik them out.  I don't think by now they'll have time to come to anything.

Not sure if it's a soil problem, or the fact that the turkey poo we rotovated in there was only 6 months old, or what, but I put growmore down and watered it in before they went in there too.

Any ideas folks????

Are some or all of the leaves curled up GA, and are they on the sunniest side of the tunnel?

If so, I can only suggest it might be that same as what happened to my Incas:

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

6 month old poo is still too fresh for toms, and any strong sun magnified in the greenhouse might be a bit overwhelming for them as they try to cope. The Gromore will be of little use to them as they battle to overcome the strength of the manure.

At this point in the season, you might get a couple of toms. Maybe.

Thanks both of you.  Tunnel faces south/north jayg, so both sides are the same.  Yes Trill, I think it may be the poop still being too fresh for them.  Brian keeps telling me to tomorite them, but I don't want to overdose them Either!

The leaves look okay, the little plants just look like they should still be in their 3" pots!  Harry in the village said that it could be the wind going into the tunnel as I had both doors open, but I explained that the wind would actually affect the other side of the tunnel the way it blows, and if I don't open both doors, the whole lot shrivel up when its this hot!

I may leave them for a bit to see if they get any taller, but if they'd all been in one spot rather than spread around inbetween the bigger plants, I would have dug them up and put something else there.  But I will give them another few weeks.

Still got 50 odd plants, which are coming along nicely, lots of little fruits on.  Nothing going red yet though!  And still got some frozen ones from last year!  So we'll manage!   :) ;)
