My chicken got sick and had yellow poo. The vet said she has a lump inside her reproductive tubes which could be a tumour and probably an infection causing the yellow poo. She gave me antibiotics to try as they may not be linked which worked a treat and she came back to her normal self however today I notice the yellow poo is back. We are going away tomorrow and our chicken sitter will not be able to give her more on his own as took 2 of us and a lot of fighting to give her the last lot. Someone suggested a long term injection as cats and dogs can have it. Is this available for chickens. The antibiotics she had before were for dogs.

Good, that is what I would have suggested.  I had a broody hen that needed antibiotics after the chicks hatched and the vet gave her an injection and then some in liquid form for me to give her for the following week.  Let us know what your vet recommends.   :)

You can get antibiotics in powder form such as aureomycin which gets mixed in their water so as long as it is made up fresh every day your chicken sitter should be ok with this :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Hi SamT,
I just wondered how you got on as I have the exact same problem...did the poos look a bit like egg yolk?
My 4 yrs old ex bat started laying soft eggs last week, then laid a strange hard boiled egg type and since then she's been going downhill fast with the yellow yolky poos and now off food. I took her to the vets and he diagnosed internal lumps that weren't intestines or eggs and said we should have her put down. I insisted on trying antibiotics(he gave us pills and she';s had 3 of these with a very slight improvement so far but I'm far fro  hopeful at this stage. She also seems to have quite a full crop despite eating so little - the vet says she could have some kind of blockage.  ANY ideas at this late stage would be helpful..she's my last ex bat and I'd hate to loose her.

So sorry Cattinj but I agree with your vet that the best thing to do would be to stop her suffering.  I know it is a difficult decision to make but she will probably have a slow and painful death otherwise.  Sorry if I sound blunt, I don't intend it that way but we all need to put our birds needs first, sad as it is.   :(  I had to make the same decision a year ago for my elderly (20 year old) cat so I know how hard it is.  We arranged for the vet to come to our home to ease hers and our distress.   :(

well the vet is't a chicken specialist by any means, and recently told me I should put a chicken down that went on to live another happy 4 months.  If she was suffering then of course I would take the difficult decision as I have done on 6 other occasions over the past 3 years, however at the moment she doesn't seem to be suffering too ,much and is now eating sweetcorn.  I will keep a close eye on her and make the right decision if and when the time comes.

I can only go by the information you have given on here and if her crop is blocked she will not be able to feed sufficiently and could starve to death.  This could take months so I would not think it would be pleasant for her.  They are very good at hiding illness as they need to in the wild otherwise they would be prey to predators.

There is a list of poultry friendly vets on HERE and also HERE

As you say, you are the one to make the final decision.
