Making an onion go to seed
« on: July 16, 2013, 14:09 »
I have just returned from France with a beautiful very large pinkish onion I bought from a market stall. Much that I would love to eat it I have decided it would be interesting to get some seed from it to see if I can grow some.I am guessing if I plant it now it should grow and bolt before the end of summer when I can then collect the seed. Before I do this Is this the right way and right time to go about it?

It's a bit late in the season to try this. My onions have been in since March and flower scapes are only just forming now.

Put it in a pot to see if it will make any roots - if you are lucky and it does - just leave it growing til it flowers.

You might have to keep it in the greenhouse to overwinter, if it doesn't flower this year it will in the spring.
