Bitter Peas
« on: July 15, 2013, 22:05 »
Hi All,
I have just got back from my Hols & before I went my KW peas were just Mange Tout & not ready for harvest. I have come back & they have 'gone over'. The plants are dying back & the Pods have gone firm & the Peas inside are like bullets and taste Bitter. I am well gutted because I really put a lot of effort into my Peas this year. The crop is fantastic its just the taste. Will they still taste bitter after cooking?

I still have 2 full rows to harvest tomorrow, am I better leaving these for seed for next season.

Thanks.

It happens with the timing, there's always something comes in when you go away. Personally I'd also be gutted if it was my peas!

I'd be thinking "next year's seed", rather than putting an inferior product on my plate.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD, Looks like I have got my 2014 Pea seed sorted.
How long do I now need to leave them on the plant for? I will need the space within 2 weeks for my Spring Cabbage, do I leave them in the Pod to store or Pod them?

Here's the second seed saving link today!

http://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/members/seed_saving/ssg6_peas.php

If they've reached the bullet stage, in this weather it shouldn't be too long before they can be harvested.

Note: they're my peas in the photo!
