OK, with apologies for going off a bit, but for a seed packet to say sow swede indoors in March is beyond understanding.

Swede need sowing outdoors in May at the earliest. That's why they've bolted. Full stop.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

As I said in my first reply, in my opinion and DD agrees that sometimes sowing winter crops to early tends to result in bolting crops.

Over the years of sowing and planting crops I have a rough idea of when each crop needs to be started so they are at their peak when I want them not when the seed packet says, but this has been gained over years and for some one new it is difficult but as I say to all our new plot holders, always ask because there is a lot of local knowledge on site which is far better than any book.

As a general rule my winter stuff is sown june/july apart form leeks and sprouts.

this is

swede
kale
early PSB
raddichio

sprouts tend to be march and leeks late march/april

Hello Again  :)
Although We've had plenty of comments about the bolting swede nobody has said what we need to do with it, as everything else around it are growing happily.

There's nothing you can do with it- except pull it up, and start again  ;)

I thought that was clear

Hi  :)
Thanks for all your replies. We are in our 3rd yr of growing so not quite newbies but still lots to learn, things like when to take notice of seed packet instructions ect. We only have a small 3mtr x 3mtr veg plot & try to get as much as poss' into it & also a small unheated greenhouse but we are both very restricted with arthritis so apart from gardening books & on here we don't have anybody to talk to for advice.
Once again Many Thanks.

A number of factors play a part, the seed packet is of based on their location to give the best results in ideal conditions, the problem as I am sure you are aware is getting prefect conditions with our current climate, this time last year and they would be under water this time last year, this year and they would be dehydrated.
Gardening is a funny old game and what you do this year is only a guideline for next.

For instance I am in Blackpool, we generally work on about three to four weeks after the sow date on the packet for most stuff but as I mentioned it will vary, its a long learning curve and as the years roll by you will get the experience to know what to do.

Just to add, sleepingpopman. If you add your location to your profile (on the left under your name)
it would give advisors/helpers a better idea of what advice to give regarding certain crops in your
particular climate.
Happy growing!
After a 3 year wait i finally have my allotment. HELP! (2/10/11)

I sowed them in modules in an unheated green house in late March, as it said on the seed packet & then planted them out at the end of May.

My swede seed packets say sow May to July. As they are generally considered a winter vegetable I'm not sure why anyone would suggest sowing as early as March.
