Low Nutrient Requirement Swede
« on: July 16, 2013, 00:32 »
Some time back I read about a new variety of swede that was bred to grow on poor soils, deficient in nutrients.  Well can I find it now I want it? Of course not!! :(

Anybody heard of this? I'd love to find it's name and supplier. Mr Google wasn't much help.

Thanks

I found this one on DT Browns website.

Swede, Tweed F1 Seeds

S: March - May H: July - February
(Replaces Virtue). British-bred and one of the first hybrid swedes, it is early and vigorous, producing uniformly round, purple shouldered roots with a delicious, cream-coloured flesh. Performs better than other swedes on less fertile soils.

250 seeds

Code: 19792

Is this what your after ....

I am growing it for the first time this year instead of marian as I have always struggled to get a decent sized swede. Tweed looks OK at the moment but currently getting covered in aphids!! If you google this you get a bunch of suppliers .

Swede 'Tweed'

Brassica napus (Napobrassica Group), Rutabaga
Hardy Annual
◾Perfect swedes on poorer soils

British bred for hybrid vigour and uniformity, Swede ‘Tweed’ grows particularly well in less fertile soil making it the perfect choice for the home gardener. The globe-shaped roots have attractive purple shoulders, and tasty cream coloured flesh of a fine texture. This superb variety is ideal for a late autumn harvest. Height: 30cm (12”). Spread: 25cm (10”).

I'm growing a 30ft row of Tweed F1 swedes this year and the tops (leaves) are massive. I have a row of Helenor next to them and they're dwarfed by the Tweed variety. Even though the tops are massive the swedes appear to be "bulking" out well. It's the first time I've tried them and they're looking good. I hope they taste as good as they look  :)
