Calabrese - what next?
« on: June 26, 2013, 10:02 »
Hi There,
My Calabrese is flowering - planning to have a lovely dinner very soon  :)
I had only planted 4 Calabrese plants in the brassica bed - the rest are kale, cabbage and sprouts.

Once I take the main flower off the four plants - I obviously wait for the side shoots to develop. Once these are munched too can I plant something else in the space where the plants where for this season?
I know that brassica really drain the nutrients out of the soil.

Would it be enough to dig in some compost and manure and put some more brassic plug plants in?
Any thoughts?

Thanks

I think the advice is not to grow the same crop in the same place time after time.

I have never got to real grips with rotating crops but it is important and i do try but then i get carried away ordering bits and it all goes to pot.

I would grow something quick growing such as Pak Choi or some other Oriental greens as the days are getting shorter  :( which suits them  :) . This year I'm trying Sobi Cabbage started off in modules (I start all Oriental Greens in modules). There are lots of options here:

If it were a bit later in the season I would plant over-wintering onion sets in the space which fits in with my crop rotations-the following year they are then in my "roots" bed until they are harvested June/July time. However,  you will have space to fit another crop in before they need to be planted.
