Thoughts on green manure??
« on: June 23, 2013, 22:23 »
Hi,

I'm thinking of planting green manure on my plot. I'm loosing the battle against weeds ( new plot for me - very overrun from previous owner!) so once I've used round up ( have given in - can't compete with bindweed, couch grass, brambles and all the rest!) I'm planning on using green manure to suppress any other weeds that might try to rear their ugly heads, and to try to return some goodness back to the soil.

Has anyone used green manure?? Does it do the job?? any recommendations?? ( I have silt / loamy soil)

Any advice gratefully received!!

Many thanks!!

This is pretty much how I cleared my second plot - Strim, Glyphosate, Dig over, Green manure and dig in.
Seems the most effective way to me - even the digging was relatively easy with the dryer summer soil and an azada. I used Mustard and dug this in before covering the plot up over winter - ready to go with a light fork over the following spring.

I reckon this time of year is a good time to take on a plot clearance - there is little pressure to clear it quickly (there isn`t really a lot you can still get in) - you can plan to start planting properly the next season. Weedkiller works well as the weeds are growing actively, digging is generally easier (if your soil isn`t baked hard!) and you`ll have time to grow a decent green manure. There are also long evenings for those who do the 9-5.
