Last years broccoli and chard
« on: June 08, 2013, 10:21 »
I planted some purple sprouting broccoli and chard  last year that stayed very small. I decided plant it out in the soil earlier this year and it has taken off and growing well. It looks like there are going to be florets on the broccoli but it isn't as big as normal when flowering. In fact i used to get them flowering in May but perhaps all broccoli are late this year ? Also, the chard is growing bigger leaves with no sign of bolting yet as I planted in a cooler, shaded part of the garden that gets sun late afternoon..

The question is will it supply through the winter if I leave it and will the broccoli not be too late to give florets ? If not I can use it's leaves instead as cabbage :-)  Ta

I don't know the answers to the first 2 questions, but broccoli leaves are delicious steamed or very briefly boiled. Also very good in stir-fries.

My psb planted out in July last year is only just flowering now - the 2 of 15 that made it through, that is!

You will probably find that the chard runs to seed at the end of the summer, as this is its second year, and that is the nature of the beast.

PSB keeps going for ages if you cut the florets but again, as it is in its second year, will give up the ghost eventually before next winter

Nice while they last though  :D

The Chard will run to seed very soon, the Broccoli you should enjoy either if it does produce florets or if it doesn't you will have brassica leaves for the table.
Do you really need al that lettuce/
