My first ever swedes have come through  and leaves are about 4 inches long.  Trouble is the germination was a bit patchy and some are crowded whilst other bits have gaps.  Does anyone know if i can replant  the thinnings in the gaps please, or will they just die?

I did it with celeriac and it worked - so I would give it a go - nothing to lose!

Celeriac is a different kettle of fish and transplants well. One rule does not cover all.

Problem with swede is that you have to be fairly careful not to damage the roots. By the sheer nature of the process of thinning, you've yanked the young plant out of the ground and already severely damaged its roots.

This is true - one rule does not apply to all but something like this where you are going to let them die anyway I would try it as the worst that can happen is that they die!

A teaspoon to dig up the transplant with as much soil as possible will help
