Because I've heard about the proverbial "they" say it doesn't make any difference last year I did some trials by chopping some of them off and leaving some on my normal garlic. I trial with a few types.

Result... no difference what so ever..
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

I ate the ones I cut off - delicious.. and the ones I left on I harvested the bulbils and planted them out this year.. just to play a bit with bringing some on from bulbils to proper sized garlic over a few years.

They can reach quite a size but drying them off for storage needs just the right sort of weather... loads of dry and plenty of sunshine.

And after that you have to get them home.
