Surely too early for blight?
« on: June 03, 2013, 23:01 »
I have some brown patches on my first earlies that look very much like blight - or could it be natural dieback and they are ready to start harvesting. Grief - I hope it's one and not the other!

Have you looked at the blight maps to see if there is any down where you are?
I hope not!

I don`t know what the weathers been like in your area, but I would imagine that it`s been too cold for blight. Probably actually too dry too.

Blight likes warm humid conditions, certainly around 10c. Look up "Smith Periods"

Mine have a bit of cold damage on the odd leaf, though paradoxically despite the very cold spring, it`s the first year for a while that they`ve not actually been frosted - could it be that?

That's what I thought but strangely enough parts of Kent received Smith's warnings last week  ::) so it doesn't have to be that warm or wet

Some of the plants on our site were hit by a bit of frost a couple of weeks ago.. they are outgrowing the hit now so was not too harsh.
Now a member of the 10 Ton club.... 2013  harvested 588 Kg from 165 sq mt..

I have some brown marks of my Charlotte potatoes, I think it was due to a frost a couple of weeks back as they weren't protected.  The Lady Crystal potatoes were under a poly tunnel and no signs of any damage on them...

Hopefully it is not blight just yet, many of my potatoes have a LOT of growing to do!

There are still no red dots on the blight map.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Is it common to get blight reports this early?

I thought first earlies were always fine?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

Not always so.

Blight is actually late this year in appearing due to the previous colder weather.

Is it guaranteed to happen every year then, in every area?
