Manure that's fresher
« on: June 02, 2013, 18:09 »
How long does horse manure take to rot down, I have a super large compost bin ready to store some for use later on.

If I get some and it's not well rotted how long would it take to be useable.

I'd leave it a year.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Lovely thanks DD.

It's a big bin so that suits to be honest.  :)

I use it fairly fresh if needs be. The stuff I have now is quite recent but it's stopped steaming and has dried out a bit so it's getting used now.  In an ideal world it's best rotted as it's far more pleasant to handle and the weeds seeds should have died off.  I rots down really well in the dalek compo bins  :)

Got a free source and the bin or dalek to put some into. We have both waiting.

Is there anything we can do to encourage rotting

You could turn it occaisionally, stop it drying out but don't let it get too wet. :)

Give it a few weeks and it may just stop me going overdue.  I should rename hubby jack the amount of time he gets sent up that hill.

  I wish mine would be more interested in the plot/garden. He will do big jobs/building for me but I really could do with more help some times. He really doesn't like gardening though. Mind you it leaves me free do to what I want with it all although he does give me the benefit of his extensive wisdom at times.

Mine is great with the building, fencing, big digging but the planting and taking care off he's not great at. If I stand there and say these go in one foot apart etc etc he can do that but as for the rest including picking he's fairly useless. He can build a compost bin city though given enough palets  ::)
He's also good at shovelling poop.

Make sure the bin is in good light, then the hotter it will get and the more rotting will occur.  The poo, urine and straw are a perfect combo for rotting to occur.  Keep checking it to make sure it doesn't get too dry as it can just end up in rock hard lumps that you have to chop up. Best keep it dampish by watering it with the can with the rose on

You don't have to water or turn it or anything and it will rot just the same but it might just take longer that's all :)
