Woo Hoo New Allotment - Chester :)
« on: May 22, 2013, 20:49 »
Wow after 2 years me and my mum have a 1/2 allotment size plot at Highfield Allotment in Chester!!!
Just been up to have a look and it looks really cool!!!

Anyway, its not in bad condition but I was wonderring where to start?
Just pull up the grass and roots and put it on the compost or do i need to burn anything?

Start digging out the roots but don't compost them as they will most probably grow again. Look along the home page here for clearing a new plot. Start a diary on here & take lots of photo's so you can look back when the going gets tough, sit & look & enjoy

With the roots of perennial weeds, you can also drown them for a few weeks in just enough water to cover them then water back onto your plot  - it smells nasty but you then keep the nutrients rather than sending them up in smoke. For clumps of grass with soil that you can't remove, I pile them up and then compost them under thick black plastic weighted down at the edges with bricks.

Have fun
