Pot eggs

Hoping for a good answer here. I am a digger of Victorian refuse sites, searching for antique bottles, and help run an antique bottle forum (actually the world's no. 1....) We often dig up ceramic eggs. They are quite cheaply made, and obviously not made for display as such. We are thinking that they were probably made to stick under a hen and hopefully encourage laying... are we right?

100% spot on, they encourage hens to go broody and you can leave her sitting on them while you get a clutch together without breaking the fertile eggs or letting them go rotten before she's ready to sit tight.
