Plant away. I'll be putting more potatoes in during August/September for Christmas fayre hopefully. With our coolish climate most crops can be planted outside of their traditional window in the non commercial small numbers us allotmenteers use.
My only worry with potatoes is the August blight period when it comes a calling.
sorry for being stupid here!so you plant them in aug/sept and eat at Christmas?.are the covered permenantly in the autumn winter?

You can do this with 'early' varieties but you must plant them in a pot and be ready to move them into a greenhouse which has sufficient frost protection.

Many people have tried it before on here, and not many have reported a lot of success, though that's no reason not to give it a try.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Might sound like a daft question but where do you get your seed potatoes at that time of year

i followed alan titchmarch advice years ago. put a few forgotten spuds that have sprouted but not gone green in a bag or big pot in september with old used compost, top up like you do, still with old compost. Christmas day i tipped pot out and had new potatoes.

Ah! We've gone all round the houses, but at least we've come back full circle!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

For years I have used sprouters from spud bags from the supermarket to grow in flower tubs using multi-purpose compost and a sprinkling of chicken poo.  Usually forget them and have some nicely unexpected extra harvests when I do eeventually stumble over them in the lee of the shed!

I spent the back end of last year into March this year visitng Mrs HGB in St James's each day and completely overlooked the tubs that were going to be used over the Christmas season.  I found them the other day in the greenhouse and knocked 'em out, finding quite a nice little haul of medium sized and incredibly clean skinned beauties as always when growing them in this way. Rubbed the sproutings off and am aiming to eat them this weekend  - I don't think they'd last till June 25 which is when I plan to set the tree with lights out in the gardenm, have a turkey burger BBQ ....and finally open the chrissie presents!

So, I would recommend giving it a go but definitely use MPC or similar to keep the pests out and then once the foliage is gone, stick them somewhere safe and out of the way - and make a note on your calendar to remember they are there!

Well, I hope Mrs HGB will enjoy them after waiting for so long. Hope you have a lovely BBQ x

Just planted 30 Desiree seed pots, so they got two choices. I'll leave them to decide :)
