Sloe bush off shoot.
« on: May 12, 2013, 15:22 »
Our sloe berry bushes have sent off a runner into part of the gravel drive, it obviously can't stay so we dug down and alone the stick type root about a foot and chopped it off.

I have had it stood overnight in water as it is just a bare stick rather than hairy with roots.
I'd like to grow it on for a friend so do I

1. Need a powder to encourage root growth
2. Stand it in water for a few days, weeks
3. Stick it in compost and leave well alone
4. Give up all hope now and tell the friend to buy one.

We have sloes at the back of our garden and in my experience they are practically impossible to kill! I have made a slow hedge out front of my house with twigs i've snapped off and stuck in the ground in Autumn and left!

Just going to throw it in and cross my fingers, I have a feeling we may see a few more sprout up before long

The ones we transplanted at school did not take  :(

I think it may have been because we did not take enough of the rooted section underground for it to grow.

There are masses more suckers so this time they will be left until the Autumn leaf fall and have a good two foot long section with roots.

They root from cuttings incredibly well - as Sheridan said - so I was gutted that the suckers died.

You could always strike some cuttings for your friend ---- no-one should have to pay for a blackthorn

Cuttings  ok may have a go, we have a very tight short hedge which has forty blackthorne in, what can I say they were cheap in lidl.  ::) I was convinced they would all die so told hubby to stick them far too close.

If I could dig a few out I would but when I say close I mean close. We have long gloves to try and get the sloes off lol

I wish I could let them grow tall but our neighbour is a bit vocal with her likes and dislikes and hedge heights  ::)

The 25ft blackthorn hedge I cut to 7ft is resprouting along my plot and it's chucking up suckers in my beds each year. It grew a secondary hedge under a former road which I cut to ground level and that's coming up again...if you ever want some free tenacious suckers do come on over!  :D

We have sloes sprouting all over the place - OH just digs them up with as much roots and soil as possible, transplants them where he wants and off they go.  :)

Maybe I was just unlucky first time around

I'll have to have another go as there are plenty of suckers  :)
