Dahlias through - hurrah!
« on: May 12, 2013, 07:06 »
I've just been up to the greenhouse and a few of my dahlias are through. Phew! Good news, means I didn't kill them when I stored them last year. Does anyone else grow them? I'm thinking of putting them into the front garden this year for a change. They seem pretty reliable but I will feed the soil this year with bf&b. how exciting 🌺
My husband's a water sign, I'm an earth sign, together we make mud :-)

Well done, most of mine seemed okay so I'm crossing my fingers for the rest of them to come through.

Talking of which, do people generally dig theirs up each year?

I planted three lovely ones a few years ago and dug them up in their first Autumn. I thought I had stored them well but they just died.

This year I'm planning to grow three more (they're coming on well in their 4 litre pots sitting out in my back garden) and just leave them in the ground.

I'm in sunny East Devon - what do you think their chances are? Any advice on protecting them over the winter, if left in the ground?

Ta.

In milder areas of the country you can mound soil and straw over the plant once the frosts have cut it down and you have cleared away the slushy bits

I planted mine down much deeper this year so that hopefully some will be able to overwinter underground

I would say you would have to dig down really deep and cover over soil, as our winters are going to be worse and worse as years go by, trust me, they have been over the last few years.

I lost all of mine when I left them in (Alan's advice no less) but it was a bad winter of 2010. Now I dig them up, make sure they are dry and put them in between 2 newspapers. Worked for me but I'm not saying it's right. Then I put spring bulbs in their place.

I'd left my pom poms out one night(drink and debauchery!! :tongue2:) and thought i'd lost them, but, to my amazement, they seem to have died back and restarted themselves, never grown flowers before so this is a total result  :D

I save the seeds each year, less faff, less space and they are about 12" high now and ready to go into the lotty.  Of course if you want named varieties you need the corms but I just want cut flowers and to encourage bees.
