Well, thinking about it in the night- as you do- i decided to sow it and when the cabbage whites start showing up soak the ground and lay thick wads of newspaper either side of the row to keep the weeds down, put a net over and leave it on until later when the butterflies have gone. I see this morning thats what  snowdrops suggested, so i'll have a go with that. 

I dont like putting compost on top of newspaper as i find it defeats the object, weeds grow in the compost and its impossible to hoe. So I'll lay bricks on mine to keep it in place.

I only used the cheapo membrane, you know the stuff that you see in rolls all over the place,it's almost see though but handled with care it will do another year. I weighted it down with milk cartons filled with water.I think if you peg it down it would rip in the winds,will see if I have pics.

Like the milk cartons idea, i'm always hunting about for bricks so will do that, thanks snowdrop.

The handles help as you don't get so grubby picking them up which is a bonus.
