When to put in leeks?
« on: May 06, 2013, 13:07 »
Hi Gang!  My leeks are coming along nicely and aren't ready just yet but I'm looking for some advice.

I was hoping to put them in when the overwintering onions and garlic come out but would this be too late?

If it is, would I be ok in putting them in deep troughs for a month or so and then moving them again or would it be better to leave them in the troughs?

Mags  :)

Leeks usually go in where the early spuds come out, but this year being so delayed that's unlikely to happen (well on my plot anyway). Don't see why it should be a problem putting them in after the onions and garlic, unless you have white rot as they are all alliums. The garlic and onions should be out by July, hopefully.

Mine stay in their deep trays until mid June usually (or deep pots for some last year) and then get planted out after the first early potatoes as Niikithefoot said.

As long as they are getting enough water and the occasional feed they can cope with being in containers for ages.

Thanks all.  I shall put a little more compost in the tray and give them a bit of a feed.  I'm sure I can fit a few in with the garlic if push comes to shove.   :)
