I have a question please.I picked up several bags of compost from the council.How best to use it in order to enrich the soil of my allotment?
I had put in horse manure in my allotment soil before the winter.

Add to beds that are tough to work and this will help break down the soil to a better more workable quality.

The manure will of added valuable humus to the beds too.

Adding a little to every bed will be beneficial
As it will contain nutrients to enrich the soil.

As you need so much compost/manure to make a noticeable difference  e.g if you want to make a difference to the top six inches of poor soil for one year, you dig in six inches thickness of compost.   
Then do it again next year.

So if I had a limited supply I would use it in concentrated patches for the most demanding crops.  Bean and squash varieties for starters.

Compost may not have masses of nutrients ---think of it as a soil conditioner (see previous posts for how you could do this) and then add some Blood fish & Bone as well for the best of both worlds

I add used compost to beds once spent to make weeds go away, I also use chicken poo pellets all over in spring and use blood fish and bone meal all over beds.

The blood,bone feed also needs to be dug in or just spread across the soil of the allotment plot ??
