I have some alicante growing, havn't grown toms before, the lower leaves seem to be drying out and curling under on themselves, the plants are at around 7-8 ins, they are on a south facing windowsill that is above a radiator, could it be that or something else, thanks

Some of mine are doing that, (4 different varieties), but they have only just developed the first true leaves before they are dying off at the edges. I'm not bothered about losing them as I have quite a stock of replacements. I just wish I could fathom out why!

Difficult to diagnose without a picture, but sounds very like too much heat or sun scorch. Ideal temp for growing on at this stage is a steady 15 degrees and bright, even but not baking sunshine.

Just wish I could achieve those conditions myself !
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

If they are getting sun plus heat from the radiator - they may just be hotter than they can cope with.

Has anyone any experience of the other one? Black Truffle?
If I try a brandywine outside, what soil will they need?

I just stuck mine in the bog standard Leicestershire soil and let them get on with it, apart from the occasional liquid tomato feed. Your Lincolnshire soil should be fine!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

My toms suffered like this. I'm sure it was a case of too hot and bright. I had them in a window, quite close to the glass, with a massive array of tinfoil just behind them. I reckon it was just too much for them. I've moved them away from the glass and set the tinfoil further back away from them. I've put some others in the GH during the day, and even though temps get quite high when the sun gets out (34 max yesterday) they seem much happier too.

Sometimes my plants look a little sick in the house, so I put them in the greenhouse, then they look a lot better after being ignored for a few weeks, apart from occasional watering. I think it can get a bit too dry in a house, perhaps.
