What to grow in this? - Now to be a pond
« on: March 14, 2013, 19:44 »
Hi all,

I have been given a hard plastic sandpit, with a couple of holes in it. Couldn't turn it down because there must be a use for it at the lottie. Looks a bit like the hopefully attached picture.

Probably get about 5/6 inches of soil in it. So, I am looking for something that has shallow roots I guess.

Should I drill lots of other holes for drainage or let it fill a bit with water?

Unfortunately it has holes in it. Would a pond this size be of any use? or would it just attract mosquitoes?

Deffo a froggy pond. I used our children's old sand pit for frogs,it was very successful. You could silicone the holes or put a cheapo liner in it.

Sorry to redirect this post, but I have Decided to create a pond. After fixing most of the holes, I now have about 3-4 inches of water in it. However, I would like it to be attractive to frogs/toads, and the water seems to be stagnant and disgusting (it is all rainwater). It even has brown 'stuff' floating around in it. So, my question is how do I sort it out to be self sustaining (or minimal work) and suitable for wildlife and not some kind of mosquito ridden foulness?
