Should I feed the garlic?
« on: April 28, 2013, 10:49 »
I'm at the plot now and the winter planted garlic are coming along very well indeed, but I can't help but feel they may benefit from a feed.

I have some grow more and some blood fish and bone in the shed.

Would they benefit by a sprinkle of any if these?

Cheers
Jim

If your soil is quite light and free draining it's quite likely it may have got quite low in nutrients since you planted them - either fertliiser would be fine, just tickling it into the soil surface if you can.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

If you (both) mean grinding up pelleted Growmore and dispersing/dissolving in water I suppose it would work more quickly, although I usually regard liquid feeding as more of a quick-fix (often in slight desperation!) - Growmore and BFB (especially) are relatively slow-release fertilisers for crops which need steady feeding over a longer period.

Obviously the amount of rainfall plays a part in how quickly it will be incorporated, but "tickling in" the dry fertiliser and then watering will help start the process off.

Thanks Jay.

I worked a wee bit of BFB into the soil as you suggested.

Why potash?

I thought potash was for fruit or flower producing veg/fruit?

But alliums are foliage and root based?
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

thanks on wise and wonderful one

There are several large black holes in my "wisdom" (don't ask me any questions about brassicas other than radishes because all I know is that they don't do at all well in my near-sandpit of a garden!)

(Oh, and if you want to know some tips about killing greenhouse cucumbers I'm yer orangutan!)

I would have said they were fruit and not leaves. Ours always thrived on it though  :)

Fancy posting whilst at the plot!  mvls of tchnoogy. My mobile phone gets covered in a fine layer of dust in my pocket whilst on the plot. When I slide it open it's all gritty.

I sprinkled fish blood and bone onto my garlic patch before I planted. Plus, it had a good amount of compost dug into it over winter. And yet I still bought garlic from Adsa today as I use masses of it for my chickens.

Have read somewhere that Human Liquid Manure fertilizing treatment in 1:3 part solution is great for garlic and onions. Its bursting with nitrogen and some potash, P being the operative word rather than K
Bob Flowerdew and Lawrence Hills swear by it!
