How to make a lemon maran?
« on: April 17, 2013, 09:30 »
I wondered whether its possible to make a lemon maran by introducing a lemon colour to the maran breed. If I were to try this what hen has the lemon colour im looking for? Has anyone done this before? I think it would make a nice hybrid but is also an interesting play on words  :D

sadly by introducing another breed you would stop the hens from producing the very dark brown eggs that the Marans are famous for (and I am sure you would upset those who are trying to keep that breed as pure as possible). However for your own pleasure you can mix whatever breeds you want to so perhaps look out for a similar sized hen with a lemon pyle feathering - you can get lemon pyle brahma chickens  :)
Not sure if you would need the male to be a lemon pyle or the hen to be, and likewise the Marans
Staffies are softer than you think.

I think you would have to breed several times to refine any colour as you will probably get a real mixture of colours in just one crossing.  Just going by my crossings of light sussex and partridge wyandotte bantams.  I have 2 that are very similar colouring but unfortunately they are both cockerels.   ::)  Pity as they are a really nice Buff Sussex colour but with the wyandotte comb.

Thanks for the replies, yes it would just be a bit of fun. I do have a light sussex cross maran hen and cockerel but they do look different. I was thinking of putting the cockerel in with the rhodeys I have and hoping the brown of the rhodeys and the white of the light sussex cross maran will produce a lemon-ish colour. I know its not that simple but i've got nothing to lose by trying  :D

I dont think my marans lay the dark chocolate coloured egg I was hoping for. Its darker than all my other eggs but not as dark as the ones I see when doing a google image search.
