Has anyone ever trimmed or removed a cockerel's spurs??

I've done it once Prod.

I used my dog's nail clippers and clipped little by little so it didn't bleed.

This is Munty's way of doing it, but I haven't tried that myself.

Cool  the reason I asked was because, from a previous post, he is causing problems with the hens & although  I have ordered a couple of saddles they wont be here till mid week.  Anyway  I googled removing spurs and found both the methods in the link.  I decided to try the pliers method and having caught him (he is quite a friendly boy, only 12 mths old but used to being handled)  and held him for a while till he was calmer then I used a pair of pliers and gently 'twisted' them The spurs came away instantly  with virtually no bleeding. You can obviously see that they are a bit raw  but no blood.  I sprayed them with purple spray  and held him for a while  then put him down and he was fine.. After a couple of hours I picked him up again to check and he was fine  so I sprayed a bit more just to be sure & will check him again tonight.  Result!!!

If you do get any bleeding at any time and don't have wound powder I have used cornflour which was a tip joyfull posted.  It works a treat.
