Hi, just built my first raised bed 7' x 3', and was wondering what was the best compost to fill it with? At present I have no homemade compost as I have just taken the plot on, and last year I was using b&q compost at home, but it didn't really seem to be good quality, lots of twigs and not much else. I am thinking a mixture of soil improver, mp compost and some top soil. Are there any brands to stay away from, or brands which you have found good?

I always filled mine with horse manure and then top soil.

Add any compost, well rotted manure or top soil that you can get hold of, then fork over to mix it a bit with the soil underneath 

Don't worry about twiggy fibrous bits in compost - it'll be fine
