hen found
« on: April 02, 2013, 11:15 »
We found a warren hen in the garden yesterday, luckily we had a hen house and food ready for when we bought some bantums. We have asked around for who might own it but no luck yet. It is happy at the moment and has laid two eggs, but we are worried about it being on it's own. Would like to know if we bought some bantams would they be happy together.

I would have thought someone would be looking for her.  Your local police and local vet offices keep details of missing animals, as does the dog warden and RSPCA so it's worth asking them before taking her on as she's not yours.  If, after you've done all that and no-one comes forward to claim her then, you could keep her and get some more hens to keep her company. There will be squabbles until the pecking order is established, and during that period you have to be vigilant as you might have to intervene to prevent injuries.  You could always hand her over to the RSPCA and then get your own hens together, which might be easier on you

Let us know how you get on  :)  Til then you'll have to be her pal  :)

We have bantams and larger fowl all together and they are fine. How many bantams were you planning on getting? Could you get one for now to keep her company? then when they have become friends you could introduce a couple more. That way she won't be the odd one out and is less likely to be picked on by the new comers.

Thanks for your help hadn't thought to check vets, rang them and yes some one had reported her missing. Before they managed to contact them, they went door to door and they were over the moon to find her. We are now getting our bantums on Friday can't wait.

Oh I love a happy ending. You now know another hen keeper near you too which might come in handy. Kindred spirits etc and potential hen sitters should needs be  :)

Bantams are lovely, but flighty!!!! They are lighter than standard sized birds and will be away over your fences given half a chance  :)

Read the poultry advice stickies here and learn all you can about your new charges. There is also a list of hen friendly vets too, which you might need to turn to if you get a problem

You are required to publish photos of your new hens by the way  :)
