Too cold to start sowing stuff?
« on: March 22, 2013, 08:23 »
What's going on with the weather?!!

I was hoping to sow my parsnips, early carrots and early potatoes this week. Do you think it's still too cold?

I would guess that even where you are the outdoor soil is too wet and cold for sowing anything to be either physically possible or likely to succeed.

Here it's snowing like the clappers - sowing directly into snow is an experiment too far even for me!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I tried to prick out some seedlings in the greenhouse a few days ago but could not get them apart as the compost was frozen solid. The seedlings were fine until the sun came out and the temperature went up to 30C. They could not pump any water up to their leaves and drooped.

Point taken!  :tongue2: I feel slightly better now that we are up to the tropical heights of 2 degrees at the weekend!

Do you think this is going to have a detrimental effect on our growing this year?  :(

It's certainly a slow start but hopefully spring will arrive eventually, and everything will happen in a rush then  :nowink:
