when to move flower seedlings
« on: March 05, 2013, 21:32 »
I am growing flowers this year:
foxglove
stock
candytuft
aster
cosmos
verbana
geranium
french marigold
aquilegia
poppy
delphiniums
I have them all sowed at home in an unheated bedroom. When germinated at what stage can I move them to an unheated greenhouse?

Thanks

Eeek - I'm not a flower expert, but unheated in your area, I'd say you're a little bit ahead of yourself.

I've sown geraniums pelargoniums, which today I've pricked out and moved from the house into what was the frost free greenhouse and cranked the heat up.

I'm not contemplating sowing any more for a couple of weeks at least and I'll have a heated greenhouse to cope with them.

BUT - that's me - I only do basic bedding plants!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I sowed geraniums this year too. Looking lovely.
They are all an inch high and happy out in the unheated greenhouse, but then I am further south ;).

Probably a bit to soon all the way up in glasgow - marigolds might be ok, they're fairly robust little seedlings. Are you still having frosts up there?

I agree about marigolds, Tagettes etc.. (Same thing in my simple flower knowledge).

I would venture to say that the question is not "are you still having frosts", but "are you likely to have frosts"?

Here in the deep East Midlands, the answer is yes.

Thanks for the replies guys,
I,ve only sowed about 1/2 dozen as most of them as it says i could do it from feb. I thought I would sow a couple of each, each month. I should be able to pot the smaller ones and keep in the house for now the bigger ones can take their chance when they get too big. Our weather up here has been quite mild, we never got much of the snow either but I suppose itonly takes 1 bad night.

I will try a pop up greenhouse within the greenhouse to give them a better chance when I move them

These seed packet dates, as we often say, are a coverall for the whole of the UK.

This covers from the Isles of Scilly to the Shetland Isles. You have to make allowances for your own area. In most cases this means quite a bit later than the earliest date on the packet.

Aquilegia may need exposure to cold to germinate, depending on how old the seeds are.

A great site here, with good info
