mulch around brassicas
« on: March 08, 2013, 21:02 »
I thought I would mulch my brassicas with used woodchip from my chicken pen.  It is covered in chicken manure so thought that any nitrogen definciency from the rotting woodchip would be neutralised.  I would keep it away from the plant stems, but would it be too strong for brassicas?

If both the manure and the wood chip is still rotting then I suggest it may be too fresh and could cause a short term lapse in nitrogen.
It's always good to mulch plants but it would be better to stack it and let it rot somewhere before using it next winter.
