Hope you are lucky with your pear, I bought a "family pear " from VanMuen 5years ago, very healthy and growing well but has yet to have a single flower grow.Though looking at the new buds this year there are(I think) a few flower buds swelling!!!

Be careful with the Aldi trees, they don't look like they are on dwarfing rootstocks, which you want as you have a smaller plot. Best bet IMHO would be to get a cordon pear online (Chris Bowers, Ken Muir etc). Conference or Concorde varieties are good as self fertile (other pears need pollinating by another tree to produce fruit). They come 5' high, will fruit next year (as opposed to 4 yrs for Aldi trees), grow to 7' high and only 2-3' wide, so won't cast much shade. Need to be staked, need lots of compost/manure dug in and bases kept weed free for a good 3-4' radius.

If you read the label on the Aldi trees it will not tell you the root stock, but will tell you how high they are estimated to grow.  I have had three apple trees from Aldi which I am growing as step overs and they are doing great.   Got two peaches and two Apricot trees  this year from them.
