does anyone else have amarylises?

it's become a bit of an obsession for me -- i love how big and gaudy they are in the middle of winter/spring

i bought another 3 last week, don't know how many i have but they're on pretty much all the windowsills in our house

Wouldn't say they're an obsession with me, I just can't bear to part with bulbs that keep growing now that I know how. Had 8 until yesterday when my sister gave us 2 more for Christmas pressies. Groan.

Erm, I'm not addicted, but I have a pretty red one I got for Christmas a few years ago.

It doesn't have any buds coming up yet because it hasn't done its dormancy thing yet.  In fact it's still healthy and green, if a bit leathery, even though I haven't watered it since September.  Should I be chopping back to give it the hint?

Cheers
Helen :)

hmm... mine are the same, the last of the leaves are just beginning to fade but not ready to be pulled off. Then the bulbs can be dried out a bit and repotted ready for spring. They are gorgeous aren't they!

i'm not addicted either, maybe obsession was a bit too strong a word to use, but i do have over 20 of them...

i think some of mine have flowered a second year without going into dormancy, but i may very well be wrong...

Well mine must be on ONLY one that decided not to grow then!!   ... but to be fair it bloomed it's socks off so I put it outside last summer ... don't think it has recovered yet !!  The bulb now looks tiny ...  :?

i put some of my first ones outside for the summer and the bulbs got totally eaten up by slugs and snails. so mine always stay inside...and it helps if you feed them a little bit too

Spot on Rosemary. Like all plants, bulbs need feeding, which I do when I bring mine inside after summer. The light change causes dieback, which is fine, then new leaves appear and I start the feeding and voila, new flowers around Christmas.
