I plant them in toilet roll inner tubes (cut in half - 2-4-1 ) and let them sprout - currently in unheated greenhouse.

Plant them oooh 5-6 inches apart. Net immediately and leave netted. Feed twice with onion fertiliser.

Don't want to go off topic here, but do you remove the toliet roll or just plant it and let it degrade down?  I've thought of doing this myself, but I'm not sure the roll will break down quick enough to allow the onion set to grow properly??

It breaks down almost before you plant them out... no probs at all..

Yup. I rip them as I plant them and bury the soggy card roll with the onion.

I have a novel approach.

I take one from the bag and pop it in the soil. 6" further on I do the same. Repeat until the bag is empty.

Exactly.

There is the easier way as DD has mentioned above

But - I tried that with japanese onions and not one sprouted
