Pear, plum and apple trees in Scotland
« on: March 02, 2013, 19:23 »
Hello,

I'd be grateful for some advice on planting fruit trees in Edinburgh, Scotland:

1) What varieties of the above fruits have people had success with in Scotland?  The garden is fairly sheltered but on a hill.

2) How far apart should fruit trees be spaced, in your opinion?

Sorry if these are newbie questions! :)

On question 2, it will depend on the rootstock.  Fruit trees come on different size rootstocks, which govern the eventual maximum size of the tree - that will dictate how far apart you should grow the trees.

Don't forget that not much else will grow under the canopy of the trees, because of competition for water / nutrients / light.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks both!  That's a great website, dmg.

As I have a small space,  I find these "duo" trees to be appealing - anyone tried them?
