Hen swaying and falling to the left.
« on: February 25, 2013, 12:19 »
Current is my 2yo exbat hen. Today she has been walking slowly (and swaying). She is also falling on her left side. She is still eating, drinking and pooping as normal. Her legs and joints all seem to be perfectly fine. Here ears also look normal and don't feel hot to the touch. Has anyone got any ideas on what might be the matter?
I would take her to the vet but the local one only dispatches poorly chickens so not really an option at the moment.

Have a look on the Stickies here as there is a list here of good poultry vets, posted up by us who have had good experiences with local vets. Good luck. It sounds as if she needs help  :)

Thanks but there isn't one here. The closest one on the list is a very long drive and I wont have the car back until Sunday. The local vets really don't do chickens and if she needed to be put down I'd prefer to do it myself.
I just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions on how to help her. I thought maybe someone would of seen it before?
Perhaps it's a stroke or a bang on the head?

Just found this on the internet - maybe worth a try...   "Hi, can't be absolutely sure, but when my hen had this she was suffering froma protein defiency remedied by cat food. I had dried food so I soaked it in water first to make it soggy and she recovered within days. She had just had a huge moult and the drain from her bones/muscles for new protein for her growing feathers meant that she lost co-ordination, looking like she was drunk, tilting to one side, when she tried to walk, especially when going down to peck! If this fits then great, but there may be other reasons. Cat food won't hurt for a few days anyway so it is always worth trying, if you don't get any better responses!!! "
Now what shall I do today?

Thank you, I will give it a try as we have plenty of cat food in the cupboard, dried and tinned.

I'm guessing she must of bumped her head somehow as Current is much better today. Her balance is almost back to normal and she's hogging the feeder as always.  :D

Current is perfectly fine today. Whatever it was it looks like she is over it.  :)
