What's Bob Flowerdew Growing This Year ?
« on: February 22, 2013, 15:50 »
Bob Flowerdew has just said, on GQT, that this year he is going to “keep it simple”.

He said he has grown all the exotic, unusual things but this year he’s concentrating on the basics - cabbages, onions, carrots… etc. - the sort of things his children will eat and his wife will cook and will store well.

    He's turning into ME  ::)

I hope he doesn't class sweet corn as exotic and/or something his kids won't eat (I'd seriously consider putting them up for adoption if that were the case!)  ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Has he still got the long blonde plait?  :D

To me it makes perfect sense, with all this unsettled weather, to grow the standard crops for our climate  ;)

I thought this thread was going to be about facial hair... :nowink:

Crops are much better!

I'm cutting down my types of veg but growing more of what we like.  I don't reckon I'll be doing scorzonera again - lovely flavour eventually, but too fiddly to harvest, cook etc. and the after effects........well, let's just say I had the windows open for a long while... :tongue2:

No point in doing a lot of cabbages Mr Flowerdew as my kids won't eat them - given up the fight after 40 odd years. Have grown the odd ones when there were rabbits kept as pets mind.

Mine reacted fairly badly to salsify but elephant garlic was way, way worse

It's interesting that the pigtailed one is keeping it simple this year as that has also been my intention. Over the years I've tried all sorts of things from aubergines to salsify but in the end it boils down to what we eat every day/week. Just finished the last of the stored onions  but overwintered spring onions in the greenhouse are now big enough to pick so I have a year-round supply of my favourite veg. More spuds, more beans and more swedes will be taking the place of squashes, celery and cauliflowers which have been a struggle this last few years.

I do not know about keeping it simple..............I'm trying James Wong 'Homegrown Revolution' this year.
