Wilkos already chitting potato seeds
« on: February 19, 2013, 21:51 »
Hi. Today I went to Wilko's in my dinner hour, they had plenty of seed potatoes, however they had all began to Chit, the chits were soft and supple. When I chitted last year mine were thick and rigid, when I bought mine last year there were no chits, so all the chits were my own doing, would you recommend buying seed potatoes that have begun the chitting process  :)

As long as they are not long and spindly they'll be fine. Saves you a couple of weeks so go for it.

Seed potatoes start the growth process the minute they are removed from cold storage..

The trouble is that Wilkos always get their spuds in directly after Christmas so if you are buying from them - then buy early, so you can keep them cool. It's much too warm in the store.

If the shoots aren't too long then buy them and keep them cool and in the light until planting and they will be ok. If some are already too long, then rub them off and new ones will grow.
