Great - thanks for the answers. I haven't seen any of the carrot mesh up close yet (am comparing prices online) so I wasn't sure how big the holes were / hence my question about watering.

Water pipe makes perfect sense! Will be googling that this week as well - thanks!

I've just bought some from Greenfingers in their sale - it had 100% extra free! Long narrow pieces though - depends what you need.

i have been looking at getting debris netting, it is so much cheaper than enviromesh. i do have one related question regarding the carrots though. obviously when it ckmes to thinning and weeding the mesh will have to be removed while i work. surely the flies will have a chance to sneak in then, do wejust have to take the chance and hope we get away with it?

The amount of time the netting will be removed is minute in comparison to the time it is protecting your crop.

The fly is more active during the day and when it's sunny, so do your weeding in the evening to reduce the risk even further.

Here's a very useful fact sheet:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks Cadelot, saves me some leg finger work!

I didn't buy any last year due to the expense, but this year I think I will splash out

So far I have not bought any pipe at all - I have however picked up enough from freecycle to make 9 x 2m hoops which should just be enough for two 1.2m x 2.4m beds - Got to be said I'm becoming a bit of a freecycle addict!
