blooming mucus in faeces
« on: December 02, 2007, 19:55 »
one of my chickens has had the runs for weeks - since she arrived 3 weeks ago, today I seen her lay a firmer one with white cap so shes hopefully getting better.....but now I have another poo problem - I have noticed some semi-soft poo with red mucus in it and some runny stuff with the mucus in.  not sure which of the birds it belongs too.

the birds are freerange mostly and have plenty of room in coup.  they eat pellets and daily kitchen scraps - pasta, rice, veg, weetabix, fruit, bread, beans.

I have searched the topic and know I need to worm with flubavet but couldnt find anything on the blood.
Avoid fruit and nuts.  You are what you eat.

Not sure to be honest pookey poo's not my thing    Aunty's the lady for that.
But I do know sometimes they shed the lining of the gut which is quite normal and usually a orange/red colour.

Is it just the one instance ?

Blood in faeces is often a sign of coccidiosis - which is quite serious.

Were your birds vaccinated for it when they were chics  :?:

There are quite a number of medications available for treatment and I personally  would consult a vet.  You can get coccidia treatment from pet stores in the meantime.

How old are your chooks? cocci affects younger birds normally from 4 - 16weeks  and is really serious often fatal if not caught in time- are they scratching around and eating as normal or fluffed up and miserable looking?
Here is Auntys link to worms I found it really useful!  :D

hi, the hens are about 20 weeks, they all seem fine in themselves and the one with the runny poo eats like a horse.

i dont know if they were vaccinated Aunty, they were dropped off by those naughty hunters.

Where is the best place to get the wormer and other treatments if my vet dont have them.

If the bird appears healthy enough, the matter will probably clear up unaided.

If there is some blood in its droppings, IMO the last thing it needs is its system purging by being wormed.

I would be tempted to run a coccidiostat through the birds water. This can be purchased from your vet or possibly through you local agricultural merchants.

Snap Bodger  :D

It is very rare that worms will cause blood in the faeces, and a coccidia treatment would be wise  :!:

Thanks Bodger and Aunty, I got wormer from the vets today before I read this post.  Will a coccidiostat be safe for all the chickens to have as I dont know which bird has the blooming poo?  The trainee vet said keep an eye on it and if it hasnt stopped in a couple of days to phone and speak to a vet.  I could go back to town on Thursday and pick something up then (the vets is about 15 miles away - bit of a treck!)

This is what I have used when have suspected cocciodosis. This is a good site to buy a variety of poultry medication. They do flubenvet at a reasonable price too I think its fee delivery at the mo.

Aunty - can you just clarify that I DONT worm the birds untill I give them Coxoid?  or do I leave worming till the bloods gone?

I have ordered the coxoid, but not sure how ong it will take.  Delivery was free too.

I think I'd not give them the wormer yet.  Try the cocoid first.  But you are the person on the ground. If they (or one) deteriorates before you get the coxoid you may need to take further advice
