« on: February 11, 2013, 10:57 »
hi just bought 2 trees from aldi  and i have a couple of questions

my plot has a rule no plant can be planted which will grow over 7 foot .

i am guessing they will grow bigger than that ... will they be ok to grow in these builders bendy buckets

sure these are dwarf root stock ...

Morning Mike,
Ive just bought 12 of these suckers so they better be good :) I even took a gamble on the peach tree hoping global warming will give it a good UK life haha. I found some of the labels confusing, some said self fertile some said self pollinating, I believe the self fertile ones means you may need 2 of each unless your neighbours happen to have a tree that pollinates it.

Check out this link....

http://www.orangepippintrees.co.uk/pollinationchecker.aspx?a=0&v=1249

I cant see a problem growing them in the buckets but I would use a sturdier bucket, i.e. one that doesnt flex as it could interfere with the roots which will interfere with the fruiting. I'd use a giant flower pot or make a wooden planter with handles on the side. I am planting mine in the ground however the soil is quite clayish where I am so im going to make a raised bed for them to help with drainage.

hi

thanks for reply

lables were indeed a minefield , i think my braeburn is self pollinating and pear is partly

partly pollinating i dont really understand that term , but i will be looking for some matches for them in the stores conference pear looks a good choice

what did you buy ?

Will look out for some good size tubs to get them planted

I just bought 2 coxs orange pippin. cant go wrong for 3.99.

It says they will grow to between 6-10 ft. What root stock would that be? There is no info on the label and all the info online doesnt tally up.

Cheers.

I think if you plonk them straight in the ground but shape them well or train them into stepovers they wont get too big

The graft should be very obvious but is no indication of the type of rootstock. The trouble is there are very dwarfing, dwarfing and semi-dwarfing stocks so you could still end up with a tree 12 feet tall. The pear, on a quince rootstock, will make a larger tree. I have one that's 4 years old and is already 10 feet tall.

The williams pear tree label says it will grow to 3meters/10ft.
Self fertile means you don't need others to pollinate, partly self fertile means you may get fruit without a partner but you'd be better with one (or you can hand pollinate).
