toilet rolls for broad beans
« on: January 31, 2013, 21:26 »
hi there, I've just said hello in the newbie section! I've come here looking for advice re using toilet rolls as pots for seedlings. I did a search earlier and was looking through the 9 pages of stuff, and couldn't find the exact post again just now. Several people were saying that they use toilet rolls for different veg and then someone said they cut the rolls in half  -making them half the height.

Can anyone tell me if they cut them down when it comes to broad beans? I was wondering whether the height of a regular toilet roll might be what a broad bean seedling needs, for its roots.

If anyone who uses them for broad beans could tell me if they cut them down or not, that would be great. I was about to get a few underway nowish.

Thanks! Jo.

Loo rolls work very well with broad beans but the beans could sprout anywhere from the roll.  I waited in vain for weeks for sign of life but they were growing out of the base of the loo roll rather than the top  :D

Should be re-named daft beans, rather than broad beans

Just remember that the loo rolls will need to be close together to hold each other up and put in somehting to contain the compost at the bottom too. Once the cardboard is wet ist sags easily.

I start off sweetpeas in loo rolls like this

I use the rolling pin to flatten them and make them into squares so they stand up and fit closely together.

I put them in those blue plastic mushroom boxes as you can get them in quite firmly and the high sides of the box keeps the rolls in place. The compost which falls into the bottom of the box while you fill the rolls gets left where it is and I water that  :)

to widen the topic slightly, i am aware that beetrroot should be sown where you want it to grow, as it doesn't transplant well, could you sow 1 seed into loo rolls(ive got a monogerm variety) under cover, and plant out complete whilst the plants are still very young. would that overcome any problem with root disturbance

Lots of people on our plots sow beetroot in modules & transplant successfully. You'll find that the seed is actually a clump of seeds, it's fine to plant out in the clump, the beetroot just push each other out of the way.

WW says that they've got the monogerm variety, which is a single seed. But yes, they take to transplanting better than parsnips.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
